It’s Kind of a Funny Story

Jenga

Today was a little out of sorts.  We experienced a series of coincidental events, which Krista calls it ’serendipity’.  Unlike other days, we had late lunch today – which was the beginning of it all.

We were engrossed with our tasks (and entertainment) that we took our own sweet time to call a time-out.  For the first time, I declared my hunger and we decided to have fast food for a change – most of the kopitiams would’ve run out of food during that hour anyway.  Our odd timing brought us to a familiar face, as I bumped into my good friend Jade at McD’s.  Jade is one of the most creative people I know – she has just finished her diploma and is looking for a job, and at the same time, the company has a vacancy!  After a brief introduction session, all four of us (Nic, Krista, Jade, myself) were talking like old friends.

We invited her to the office, to have a look and to join us for a few rounds of Jenga as Nic (Mr. Boss) applied his kungfu skills into the game, serenaded with Michael Jackson’s music in the background.    Above is a photo of Krista (Mrs. Boss) getting a block out of the tower.  She claims her left hand is steadier even though she’s a righty.

To remove a block and to keep the tower stable isn’t easy.  We all know that.  It’s like churning ideas and effort while keeping ourselves sane.  Sometimes we go a little too far, the tower wobbles and shakes – and that’s exactly how we feel when we’re exhausted from thinking or doing too much.  So we pause and let the tower be still, put the block back onto the top, and move on.

The difference between us and an ordinary Jenga tower would be that we last a whole lot longer than that.  We were made by the most advanced maker in the world, so wonderfully complex, and so amazingly strong.  If we play our cards right, we’ll be building and building ourselves to be the very best versions of us.  By playing our cards right means knowing when to stop, replenish, and carry on.

Fortunately for me, even though I made the tower topple twice out of three times, it was only a game and it had us in fits of laughter.  It’s important to sometimes take ourselves less seriously too.

When Jade left, Krista challenged me to a couple games of Master Mind.  I haven’t played that game in years!

More Than I Bargained For

RBS

A pay day is a happy day.  It doesn’t take a genius to figure that out.  My bosses handed me that rectangular piece of paper that is worth a sum of money yesterday, thus signifying that I’ve been working in Redbox Studio for a month.  When I stared at the numbers written on it, I laughed to myself feeling as though I have made a huge profit.

Because the real amount, is never written on a piece of paper.

Of course, this would depend on a person’s point of view on what value is all about.  I always believe that if I’m working on something that I like very much, I get paid with every single hour that I put in.  Paid with experience, skills, and definitely fun.

So many things have happened and lessons learned since the first day I joined the team.  Among the few are:

  • learned new web-designing jargons, picked up some handy skills
  • witnessing a Lasik surgery at the Adventist Vision Center
  • our boardgames session that includes chess and Monopoly
  • constant pep talks, philosophy and advice from my uber cool bosses
  • our brainstorming sessions for ideas
  • keeping my “designer’s ego” in check, and putting our client’s client first
  • i. so. improved. my. CATIA. skills.  Yeah, believe it.
  • …and a lot more that were crammed in 30 days.

I have one and a half weeks left, and I’m beginning to miss it already.

Sometimes I worry if I will enjoy my real internship stint which begins at the end of this year as compared to all the previous jobs I’ve done.  But one of the things that my parents, and even my bosses have taught me is that our attitude towards our job is very important.  When we have our heads screwed on right on each task we perform, we’ll eventually realize that work becomes a fun, learning process.

Top it with a couple of really nice superiors – we’ve got ourselves quite a darn good deal.  Like I mentioned in the title, I think I’ve pretty much gotten more than I bargained for.

Here’s a quick, short test to find out if we’re really enjoying our jobs.  When you find it weird to use the terms “work” while you’re uh…working,  you know you’ve somehow hit the right button.

My December ‘08 Retreat

category: Life's Pleasures, Photography author: Vern

Below are photos that were taken during our Fraser’s Hill retreat in December 2008.  I made new friends, experienced the wonders of nature, played tennis on a hill, saw tarantulas for the first time and a half-foot long fat millipede.  I picked seven random shots out of 500 and put them here, just to share.

It Don’t Matter If He’s Black or White

MJ

This is the first time I went “Huh?” over the death of an icon.  I grew up to his music – my brother would buy his albums and we would try to emulate his dance moves, albeit poorly.  Sure, he had his problems with the public and soon became a constant target of mockery for comedians.

But no one can deny that this man changed the entire history of pop music.  He wasn’t called the King of Pop for nothing.

My favourite Michael Jackson song would be “Man in the Mirror”.

Gotta make a change
For once in my life
It’s gonna feel real good
Gonna make a difference
Gonna make it right

Rest in peace, MJ.

A Cuppa With A Dentist

category: Life's Pleasures, Musings author: Vern

Cuppa

I dislike going to places where I know I will end up being slightly deaf and smelling like a ciggarette.  I enjoy good beats from up-tempo techno music once in a while, but noisy places such as clubs aren’t exactly my cup of tea because I don’t get to spend good quality time with my friends that way.

Being the old soul that I am, I enjoy having conversations with people over a good cup of coffee.  Contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t have to be Starbucks nor Coffee Bean or any fancy outlets.  As a matter of fact, I’m a fan of Kopi O and would appreciate a good cuppa anytime.

So Alexis is in town.  Alexis also roughly translates as my mentor, friend, and someone I would do crazy things with and still remain sober at the end of it all.  Oh, she’s also a dentist and she’s in town for a fancy dental conference at a fancy hotel.  Ok, enough personal information.

I picked her up from her friend’s place, went for makan and then settled at a quiet cafe sipping our coffee and telling each other stories.  And I like listening to people’s stories.  Because I think there are no better life lessons than those that have been tried and tested and shared from the heart.  And Alexis is one person who has a lot of stories to share.  Despite her cool and calm demeanour that she portrays because of her profession, she did have some wicked adventures and experiences when she was slightly younger (she’s still very young, by the way).

I’m pretty sure that underneath that humble character, a big dream is being built and a history maker is being molded.

When I meet such people who then become my friends, their lifestyle and outlook on things become an inspiration to me.  Which is a bit funny because just yesterday I was complaining to myself that I lacked some.

Coincidentally, today, my bosses were giving me a pep talk about dreams and where the possibilities are endless as long as one believes.  All I have to do, is to sit and think about it.

I think it’s time I put my beanbag and notebook to good use.

A Typical Day at Work, Kinda.

category: Design, Musings author: Vern

WorkFun

I wanted to type a back-to-back schedule like what they do in diaries to describe a typical day at work.  I started with “9am, turn on my laptop…” and then I stopped.

Who was I kidding?  There is NO typical day at work!  Every day I learn something new, in work, and general knowledge too.  OK, if I really have to, I’d say that a “typical” working day would involve trading DVDs, books, playing chess and Monopoly, field trips, long chats about everything and anything, and of course, not forgetting the very reason why I am working – 101 lessons on what web designing is all about.

It has almost been a month since I started working at Redbox Studio and the thought of leaving and going back to campus a couple weeks later is enough to make me miss it already!  I wanted to write a little bit about the people who hired me, but I guess that deserves another post on its own.

As for now, I will continue to savour the remaining working hours I have left before school starts.  Sounds crazy, doesn’t it?

Trust me, when working at a place like that, one would willingly label oneself as a workaholic.  ;-)

Putting ‘ME’ Back In ‘TIME’

category: Musings author: Vern

Time

Taking a short break is good.  But that doesn’t mean not doing anything.  It just means not doing anything because of anyone but me.  As selfish as it may sound, I took the time to ‘realign’ myself a little bit by doing the things I love and learning new things every single day.  One of the many, many things that I’ve learned at the new company I’m working in is that sometimes it’s good to shut the doors for awhile and focus on what’s inside.

It’s similar to reformatting or performing a full system scan of a computer.  Remove old and unused programs, including miscellaneous stuff that somehow make its way into the system without permission, restart and witness the magic of what a little bit of cleaning up can do.

The extra space from all that cleaning up then make way for newer, better and more useful applications.

Sometimes there are certain points in life where you feel right at home and you don’t want to be anywhere else.

This is one of them.
